A Witch’s Guide to Magical Innkeeping

A Witch’s Guide to Magical Innkeeping by Sangu Mandanna

After finishing The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches, I didn’t hesitate — I immediately went searching for more books from Sangu Mandanna. So when A Witch’s Guide to Magical Innkeeping was released, I scooped it up right away… and once again, she absolutely delivered.

This story centers around Sera Swan, a once-powerful witch who has lost nearly all of her magic after making a forbidden choice — resurrecting her beloved great-aunt Jasmine. That single act sends her life spiraling in unexpected directions: exile from the Guild, diminished powers, and a reluctant new role helping to run a magical inn in Lancashire alongside the very aunt she brought back from the dead. Add in a semi-villainous talking fox, a parade of quirky guests, and the looming pressure of the Guild watching her every move, and Sera’s world feels both chaotic and deeply human.

Much like Irregular Witches, this book is beautifully anchored in one main setting — the inn itself. There’s something grounding about that. The inn becomes more than a backdrop; it’s a living, breathing space where healing happens slowly, imperfectly, and often unintentionally. I found myself completely drawn into Sera’s world — from her grumpiness and longing for the magic she lost, to her quiet hope that maybe she hasn’t lost herself entirely.

One of my favorite elements was the idea of a witches’ school and the lingering echoes of Sera’s past potential. But what truly made this story land so deeply was its heart: the reminder that magic doesn’t always live in spells, spellbooks, or raw power. Sometimes, the truest magic is found in chosen family — in the people who show up, stay, and love you even when you feel broken or unfinished.

The romance is present but gentle, unfolding at a cozy, unhurried pace. Luke Larsen, the historian who helps Sera investigate an old spellbook rumored to restore her power, brings warmth and quiet depth to the story. Their connection feels organic, never rushed, and perfectly suited to the tone of the book.

This is a story about second chances — not just at magic or love, but at belonging. It’s about learning that losing something you thought defined you might actually open the door to discovering what truly sustains you.

This is a perfect curl-up-with-tea book — ideal for a quiet weekend, a rainy afternoon, or any moment when your nervous system is craving something gentle, comforting, and affirming.

A Witch’s Guide to Magical Innkeeping is cozy in the truest sense of the word. It doesn’t ask you to brace yourself for intensity or heartbreak — instead, it invites you to rest inside a story where warmth, community, and quiet magic take center stage. I closed this book feeling soothed, uplifted, and softly reminded that we are never as alone as we think.
